Moving Bed Bioreactor (MBBR) requires less land and less daily operation attention than traditional systems. A smartly designed MBBR provides the lowest overall cost of ownership during the life of the plant. The principle of the MBBR process is based on the fundamental concepts of biofilm technology, where a certain quantity of suspended carriers is added to the reactor to increase both the biomass and microbial diversity within the system, thereby enhancing treatment efficiency. Since the density of the carriers is close to that of water, they mix completely with the water during aeration, creating a microbial growth environment encompassing gas, liquid, and solid phases.

The collision and shearing action of the carriers in the water break down bubbles into smaller sizes, improving oxygen utilization efficiency. Moreover, different types of microorganisms grow on the inner and outer surfaces of each carrier. Anaerobic or facultative bacteria thrive inside the carriers, while aerobic bacteria colonize the outer surfaces. This configuration turns each carrier into a micro-reactor, enabling simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, thus enhancing the overall treatment performance.
